Betsy DeVos Continues Work Toward Cultivating School Choice Programs.

You can go to a member of just about any generation and ask them their thoughts on public education. Almost to a ‘T’, the responses you’ll get regarding their experiences in the school system will sound negative or less than optimistic. The uncomfortable truth is that the public school system of the United States has been failing and it continues to fail despite the countless dollars that have been thrown into the system in order to remedy the situation. Betsy DeVos, the Secretary of Education for President Trump, made this astute observation more than 30 years ago and since then she has been doing everything that she could to try and fix things.

Betsy DeVos’ goal of reforming education began long before she ever got her first job in the federal government. In fact, you could point back to her college years in order to get a read on when her commitment to reformation truly began. Milton Friedman wrote ‘The Role Of Government in Education’ more than 50 years ago and he helped to first pioneer the concept of school choice. DeVos would study his writing while at Calvin College and she would take it to heart, vowing to spread the concept to every corner of the country.

Devoted to the concept of school choice, Betsy DeVos has spent her entire adult life pushing for the concept to spread while gaining more and more support for the conservative position. In fact, her work would help lead to the first private school voucher system ever being opened up, in Milwaukee. Now, Betsy DeVos can look back at her work and see that she has really made a difference in the system. There are now more than 30 publicly funded institutes that follow the school choice model throughout 17 different states in the Union. DeVos points out that more than 40,000 new students are being enrolled in school choice programs every single year. It is only a matter of time until her concept sweeps over the rest of the nation.

While Betsy DeVos understands the importance of school choice reformation, she also understands the fact that she’ll have to play politics in order to make it spread in the way that it needs to. Right now we are living in more divisive times than ever before and that means that each political movement needs to be measured several times before a step is taken. Fortunately, Betsy DeVos has President Trump behind her and that might just be enough.
